Jane Ritchie - Personal Statement

Picture

I want to trick people into reality.

I want to trick people into being honest with themselves in the most subtle way possible. By cultivating the roots of an already present idea they are confronted with their own mortality, pondering sickness and death.

I want to entice my audience, so they don’t walk away with a bad feeling, but instead feel a sense of acceptance. Rather than show a violent or aggressive image, I gently break the news that they are damaged and they will die.

In my work, there is always a mediator, a membrane, which separates the human body and emotions both tangibly and metaphorically.

Those who engage with my work experience a blending of insecurity, discomfort, surprise, desire, and a compulsion to interact.
